Of the 812 bills introduced at the start of the Nebraska legislative session, 291 were approved in some form, Speaker John Arch said in his closing remarks. With most every bill facing a filibuster this year, the vast majority of the 291 bills approved by lawmakers were rolled into packages, including several that cleared final reading in the session’s waning hours.

$900 million
The agreement to suspend the nation’s debt limit through 2025 approved by the House and Senate immediately cuts $1.4 billion of the additional funding allocated to the IRS last year. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that with less enforcement in place, the cut will lead to a revenue loss of $2.3 billion and as a result would increase the nation’s deficit by $900 million over the next decade.

In Arkansas, one of the first states to begin reviewing Medicaid eligibility as part of the “unwinding” process, 82% of residents who lost their Medicaid coverage in April did so because they failed to return requested information or couldn’t be located. In Nebraska, the unwinding process involves reviewing eligibility of about 32,000 enrollees each month through February of next year. Enrollees should make sure their email address, mailing address and phone number on file with the Department of Health and Human Services are up to date.

$2.83 million
In the current fiscal year, Prairie City, Iowa — population 1,708 — has pulled in $2.83 million from fines paid for speed camera violations. The town works with an outside vendor which provides the four traffic cameras that netted 25,660 paid fines this year. After paying the vendor, KCCI reports that the money left over represents 42% of the town’s annual revenue.
