LINCOLN — Below are statements from OpenSky Policy Institute Executive Director Dr. Rebecca Firestone regarding LB 388, the tax package debated Thursday on final reading.
“We appreciate the broad consensus across Nebraska’s elected officials to address property taxes when they become a financial burden to taxpayers, and we look forward to a thoughtful special session focused on the state’s tax code to address the challenge of property taxes in a way that’s fair and sustainable.
“Several options are available to ensure everyone pays their fair share and that we have the revenue to invest in great schools and public safety among other state priorities. These should include a broad rollback of existing sales tax exemptions to reduce the overall sales tax rate, as well as circuit breakers and homestead exemptions that target a property tax cut to those who need it most.”
