Lincoln Journal Star on September 5: Local View: Tell the real story about Nebraska’s strong economy
Despite having the lowest unemployment rate in the nation, almost weekly news articles praising our economy and the fact that we regularly economically outperform many states with lower taxes, some Nebraska business and political leaders continue to say our state is harmed by its tax code.
A recent example came when the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce’s Barry Kennedy penned an opinion piece calling for changes to our state’s taxes, namely cutting our income taxes. What Kennedy failed to answer was, “What would be cut to fund this tax reduction?” Tax cuts sound good. We all want to keep more money in our pockets. But there is a trade-off, and that becomes the important factor in such a proposal, as more than 80 percent of our state’s general fund budget goes toward education and health and human services.
