Lincoln Journal Star on Sept. 26: Local View: Examine tax breaks’ impact on state budget
Cutting state spending in order to reduce taxes is a common refrain in Nebraska. It actually was a key goal of mine when I ran for the Legislature in 2006.
After eight years in the unicameral and serving on the Appropriations Committee, I realized there simply isn’t a lot of fat in the state budget. More than 90 percent of state spending in Nebraska goes to education, health care programs and public safety. If you want to cut state spending, those are the services you must cut.
