Gov. Jim Pillen’s plan to cut property tax bills by 40% has been the defining issue of this year’s legislative session so far, but state senators plan to roll it out remains unclear.
State Sen. Lou Ann Linehan’s LB 1315 would see the sales tax rise by 1% across Nebraska—generating nearly $500 million in revenue.
Linehan said the aim is to take the burden off of the shoulders of property tax payers
“Having people who are retired move out of the state because of property taxes to a tax that on the things they have to have generally does not apply,” she said. “It’s a shift to tax you can or cannot pay depending on your spending habits to a tax you have to pay or they take your house away.”
