In commentary published by the Kearney Hub, J.L. Schmidt notes “red flags” surrounding many of the victories touted by Gov. Jim Pillen following the recent legislative session.
The column cites concerns voiced by OpenSky Policy Institute and others regarding the drain on state funds likely to result from private school vouchers and the flexability for school districts to respond to student needs that has been stripped with the addition of a 3% revenue cap.
Regarding the income tax cuts and property tax breaks that will largely benefit wealthy Nebraskans and out-of-state corporations, Schmidt says “such massive commitments will likely lead to tough decisions for future lawmakers.”
