The Legislature made some responsible decisions on taxes this year, lending a hand to low- and middle-income Nebraskans while rejecting calls to recklessly slash the income tax.
Nonetheless, income tax cut advocates are gearing up for another push next year, as outlined recently by Barry Kennedy, president of the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce & Industry.
Despite claims that Nebraska has a reputation as a “high tax” state, it actually ranks around the middle of the pack in nearly every serious ranking of state tax rates. The Legislature’s Tax Modernization Committee recognized that, particularly after traveling the state to listen to the concerns of farmers, business owners and other residents. Simply put, income tax rates were not a top concern voiced to the committee by Nebraskans.
