OpenSky is excited to announce the completion of our latest publication, a mini-primer titled “Sustaining the Good Life: SNAP in Nebraska,” which examines the use and funding of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in our state.

SNAP is Nebraska’s most important anti-hunger program, helping more than 170,000 Nebraskans afford quality food. In addition to helping lift people out of poverty, SNAP is considered to be the most effective form of stimulus during an economic downturn, and each dollar of benefits redeemed has the potential to multiply through the supply chain, strengthening the state’s businesses. Furthermore, studies have shown that childhood exposure to SNAP leads to increased economic self-sufficiency in adulthood and less reliance on similar government programs.

This primer aims to provide a deeper understanding of this vital issue with the goal of helping state leaders formulate food insecurity policies that improve the lives of Nebraskans. (Download a printable PDF of the primer.)

We also want to note we recently updated our budget primer, “Looking for Clarity: An Overview of Nebraska Budget and Tax Policy,” with the most recent data. Download a PDF of our updated budget primer here.
