A Florida firm has been hired to circulate petitions in Nebraska that would eliminate all property, income, corporate and inheritance taxes in Nebraska, replacing them with a “consumption tax” (paid by all, including churches), creatively called “EPIC” (“Taking on taxation,” Nov. 21).
An analysis by Open Sky Policy Institute showed that this scheme would create a $7.4 billion shortfall in revenue to the state. The Nebraska Chamber of Commerce said this would create a fiscal crisis, would hit low-income folks the hardest and would deter the important 18- to 34-year-old demographic from living in Nebraska since they are the ones who consume the most, especially those with young children.
